Tawny Frogmnouth
I've not been updating the websites lately because I've been busy with stuff including this website and associated fun and games.
Tawny Frogmouth
This character has begun perching on fence posts outside of my bungalow at night for a few months now. He/she is here for the moths that flutter at my windows.
I though that the eye colour must be from the flash, but one of my bird books describes the eyes as fiery - so perhaps that is the true color!
There are three species of frogmouth in Australia. The Papuan Frogmouth is restricted to wet tropics of Cape York. The Marbles Frogmouth has two distinct races, one on Cape York and the other in the sub-tropics of north-eastern New South Wales/ south-eastern Queensland. This species - theTawny Frogmouth - is remarkable for the fact that it inhabits every corner of the continent.
The call is a soothing ooom oom ooom that may be repeated continuously for for hours.
During the day they sit still and look remarkably like a broken tree branch. If you stumble upon one you may first know about it when the bird suddenly opens it's mouth very wide and utters a harsh greaarrrk. The first time I met one (at age 8) I fell over backwards in fright!
